Apocalyptic Rhetoric Exam

This is my 5th Apocalyptic Rhetoric Exam. I will post the questions, and then add my answers. I have done well in this course so far I figured I would share kind of a glimpse of the material we cover.

1. Do you think the mass-marketing of the Mayan collapse predictions will have any real impact upon our society? Looking as shows such as Turners venture to apocalypse island, why are these dramatic appeals so popular? If few people are taking it seriously, why do they continue to consume these products?

Definitely, coming into this course expecting to hear the predicted date for the end of the world, I thought there would be some legitimate evidence. I figured the professor would introduce us to some type of mathematic or scientific or astronomical system that led to the Mayans calendar, and the prediction of the end of the world. However, entering class last Tuesday we sit and listen, and then discuss and my conclusion of the course was, “really?”  To figure out myself that this was a just some marketing scheme baffled me. Going back to the initial question I think that this will and has had a real impact on our society. Y2K now this? They’re a lot of people who are making bank on this whole “end of the world market”. Many people on the outside looking through the TV screen of mystery want people to find evidence of the world coming to an end. People want it to be true. It fascinates them, and gives them a type of high that a lot of things can’t give them. What Turner has found, and documented he could very much think is true. There are people out there who would go along with him and believe. It’s either two things, he is believes this without a doubt, or he has moseyed up some scheme to mislead people just to get a buck. For the people who don’t take it seriously, but yet are in to getting the videos, and brochures are like a little kid who gets mom to buy a happy meal just so he can get the super hero equipment inside to make him feel a part of that super heroes life. People today just want to be a part of something bigger than them.  This is the perfect window of opportunity to feel a part of something that is evidence to something that is ending.

2. Let’s invert the questions. How do you think the move to integrate occult thinking with Christianity has impacted religion in the United States? Do you think the impact of thinkers like Hal Lindsey have been positive on?
