Studying Revelation and the judgment that those who “did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts” (Rev. 9:21) frightens me. It gives me renewed motivation to take Christ beyond my front door. But it also comforts me that God will stay consistent with His character that He has laid out for us in His Word. He will carry out justice on the evildoers and I (with others) will say “Hallelujah!” Salvation and glory and power belong to our God for his judgments are true and just; for he has judged the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with her immorality, and has avenged on her the blood of his servants.” Rev. 19:1-2 Tonight in small group we will discuss the sermon that Bobby gave this morning. We will discuss what ones who God has not sealed will face.
I’ve come to think about it like this. You have friends who are actors in Hollywood. They have been married for 10 years. You have known them ever since they were newlyweds. They live in the same neighborhood as you. You have had them over for dinner on several occasions. Your kids play every weekend after church together in the driveway shooting ball. Then one night you sit down with your family and put in a movie that these friends were casted in. The movie is a wartime love story. They made the top two roles. However in the end they both die in a terrible plane accident on the way back to safe territory. But it’s just a movie. They’ll be over for dinner with their kids Friday night. It’s just a movie.
The Book of Revelation is not just a movie. The people who face this divine judgment will suffer for all eternity. The people that you and I may have over for dinner this month. Or the people that have kids that play with your kids. Or people who sit in the office cubicle next to yours. Or the students who are in your classroom. Or the families in your church. What will you do with what you study? What does your understanding of God’s righteous judgment push you to?
Studying the Book of Revelation is like studying the different methods of executions. We are studying judgments that God will carry on those who are “did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.” Those who do not repent deserve Gods wrath that will be due them one day. Studying the Bible should lead us to a correct sincere passionate motivation to take the Gospel to the world. The comfort we have is that God knows who He will seal. Our duty is to follow His command to take this redemptive truth anyone. Trust the Holy Spirit.
Praise God for His awe-inspiring redemptive story that will be carried out soon. He is victorious in the end, and He stays true to who He declares Himself as. Let us humble ourselves today.
